The Assemblies of God, Ghana, has thrown its full support behind President John Dramani Mahama following a decision by Lincoln University in the United States to withdraw an honorary doctorate conferred on him.

In a statement signed by its General Secretary, Rev. Dr. Ernest Birikorang, the church described the university’s action as one that, rather than diminishing the President, honours him for his firm stance on moral and religious principles.

The decision by Lincoln University to withdraw the honorary doctorate was in protest against President Mahama’s position on the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill currently before Ghana’s Parliament.

According to the church, the development has been met with joy unconfined among its leadership and members, who view the situation as comparable to the biblical account in Acts 5:41, where the apostles rejoiced after suffering for their beliefs.

The Assemblies of God, Ghana, noted that President Mahama, a member of the church, has consistently maintained that homosexuality is scripturally forbidden, morally degrading, and culturally unacceptable, a stance it says remains resolute and unshakable.

The church called on its members across both public and private sectors to remain steadfast in their faith and moral convictions, urging them not to compromise under any circumstances.

It also appealed to the wider Christian community to intensify prayers for the nation, warning against what it described as the sins associated with LGBTQ+ practices and their potential consequences.

The leadership of the church reiterated its support for the President and encouraged Ghanaians to uphold values they believe align with the country’s cultural and religious identity.
