Government has transferred GH¢6.1 million to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (Mahama Cares) following directives issued by President John Dramani Mahama aimed at supporting healthcare financing in the country.

The development was disclosed by Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu in a Facebook post on Thursday, May 7.

According to him, the Controller and Accountant-General officially confirmed that the amount had been deducted and transferred into the Mahama Cares Fund in accordance with directives earlier issued by the President to political appointees.

President Mahama, at the launch of the initiative last year, pledged to donate six months of his salary to support the Fund and subsequently encouraged all political appointees to contribute one month of their salaries toward the initiative.

The President also directed appointees who failed to meet the initial deadline for asset declaration to forfeit three months of their salaries to the Fund as a penalty measure.

Mr Kwakye Ofosu further revealed that arrangements are currently underway for the transfer of the remaining tranche of funds, covering deductions from appointees who defaulted on the asset declaration directive.

The MahamaCares initiative was established to mobilise financial support for healthcare interventions and improve access to medical assistance for vulnerable citizens across the country.
