France overcame a spirited Senegal challenge to secure a 3-1 victory at the New York New Jersey Stadium and kick off their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group I campaign with all three points.
The final scoreline did not reflect the balance of play in the opening half, as Senegal dominated proceedings and looked the more dangerous side. The Teranga Lions pressed aggressively, controlled the midfield and repeatedly troubled the French defence.
Senegal came close to taking the lead when Nicolas Jackson’s powerful strike crashed against the woodwork, while Ismaïla Sarr squandered a golden opportunity from close range. France, meanwhile, struggled to find their rhythm and were fortunate to head into the break with the score still goalless.

Les Bleus emerged with renewed purpose after halftime, and their improved display was rewarded in the 66th minute. Michael Olise produced a perfectly weighted pass to split the Senegalese defence, and Kylian Mbappé calmly slotted home to put France ahead.
The strike marked a historic milestone for the French captain, who became France’s all-time leading goalscorer with 57 goals, surpassing Olivier Giroud’s record.
Senegal attempted to respond, but France doubled their advantage in the 82nd minute. Substitute Bradley Barcola made an immediate impact, showing great composure to delicately chip the ball over goalkeeper Édouard Mendy and seemingly put the contest beyond reach.
The match, however, produced late drama during stoppage time.
In the 95th minute, 18-year-old Ibrahim Mbaye capitalised on a rare defensive lapse to fire home and reduce the deficit, briefly giving Senegal hope of a dramatic comeback.
Those hopes lasted barely a minute.
Straight from the restart, Mbappé collected possession and unleashed a stunning long-range strike that flew into the top corner, sealing his brace and France’s hard-fought victory.
The second goal also saw Mbappé move level with Lionel Messi on 13 World Cup goals, as France made a winning start to their quest for a third World Cup title.
