The United Party (UP) has appealed to dissatisfied members and supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to join its political movement, arguing that recent internal disagreements within the opposition party vindicate the concerns that influenced Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen’s decision to resign.

The call comes after disciplinary petitions were filed against former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, with reports indicating that some members of the NPP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) are pushing for sanctions against him.

The petitions are currently before the NPP National Disciplinary Committee chaired by former Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Atta.

In a statement signed by the UP’s Director of Communication and Spokesperson, Solomon Owusu, the party said the latest developments reflect the internal challenges it warned about following Mr Kyerematen’s departure from the NPP.

The UP, however, stressed that its focus was not to celebrate the difficulties of another political party but to offer Ghanaians what it described as a credible alternative for national development.

The party encouraged frustrated NPP members and other voters seeking a new political direction to support Alan Kyerematen and UP parliamentary candidates in future elections.

According to the party, Ghana requires visionary leadership capable of transforming the economy, creating opportunities and improving living standards.

The UP also urged citizens to exercise their constitutional right to vote based on their personal convictions, emphasising that the secrecy of the ballot protects every voter’s freedom to make an independent decision.

The party reiterated its commitment to building an “enterprise economy” that would move Ghana away from dependence on raw commodity exports and trading towards industrialisation and entrepreneurship.

The proposed agenda includes formalising the informal sector, supporting indigenous businesses, promoting technology and skills development, reforming the tax system and improving education and healthcare delivery.

The UP believes these measures will help create jobs, strengthen local industries and drive inclusive economic growth.

The United Party emerged from the Movement for Change, which was established by Mr Kyerematen after he resigned from the NPP in September 2023 over concerns surrounding the party’s presidential primary process.

He later contested the 2024 presidential election as an independent candidate before the movement was transformed into the United Party following registration by the Electoral Commission.

Mr Kyerematen, a former Minister of Trade and Industry and a four-time NPP presidential aspirant, has maintained that the UP aims to become a credible third political force focused on economic transformation, industrial growth and private sector development.
