Speaker Alban Bagbin has directed Parliament not to sit on Friday, July 10, 2026, to enable members from flood-affected constituencies to participate in the government’s National General Cleanup Exercise.

The decision follows the government’s declaration of Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026, as National General Cleaning Days across seven regions recently affected by severe flooding.

The nationwide exercise forms part of ongoing efforts to clear choked drains, desilt waterways and improve sanitation in vulnerable communities to reduce the risk of further flooding.

Addressing the House, Speaker Bagbin disclosed that the decision was reached after consultations with the leadership of Parliament on how the legislature could contribute meaningfully to the national cleanup campaign.

According to him, it was unanimously agreed that Members of Parliament representing the affected areas should return to their constituencies to provide leadership and work alongside residents during the exercise.

“Among the matters we considered was whether it would be appropriate for the House not to sit on Friday, 10th July 2026, to enable Honourable Members from the affected regions to return to their constituencies and provide direct leadership in the cleanup exercise alongside their people. Definitely, it was a unanimous yes,” the Speaker stated.

Mr. Bagbin noted that further communication regarding Parliament’s schedule and the resumption of parliamentary business would be conveyed to Members in due course.

The National General Cleaning Exercise is expected to mobilise residents, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, traditional authorities, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to remove waste from drains, desilt waterways and improve sanitation in flood-prone communities.

The initiative forms part of broader government efforts to strengthen flood prevention measures following recent heavy rains that affected several parts of the country.
