The National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salaam Mustapha, has issued a terse warning that the ruling party’s supporters’ patience is being stretched to the limit despite showing considerable restraint in the interest of peace.
Addressing the media on Monday, Salaam Mustapha expressed concerns over reports of vandalism at NPP offices and looting of state warehouses, allegedly perpetrated by members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
These incidents have sparked tensions following John Dramani Mahama’s landslide victory in the December 7, 2024, presidential election.
“Our supporters have stood firm in the interest of peace and democracy, but their patience is being tested. The party will firmly defend itself against any attack on its members,” Mustapha warned.
Salaam Mustapha criticized the silence of the President-Elect, calling on John Mahama to take immediate steps to de-escalate tensions.
“You will be responsible for Ghana’s peace, security, and economic stability in a few weeks. We are therefore surprised and deeply disappointed that you look on whilst these incidents weakening the foundation of peace, security, and economic stability to be handed to you continue,” Mustapha stated.
He urged Mahama to instruct his supporters to desist from acts of violence and allow the Electoral Commission (EC) to carry out its mandate without interference.
The NPP accused NDC supporters of instigating violence and disrupting collation processes in key constituencies, including Dome Kwabenya, Tema Central, Obuasi East, Damango, and Techiman South.
He argued that NDC is challenging and provoking the security forces to respond so they can quickly turn around and accuse them of intimidation and violence against their supporters and warned, “This is exactly what leads to electoral violence.
He also stressed the alleged seizure and destruction of election materials, such as ballots and pink sheets, as well as the vandalism of public and private property.
Mustapha reaffirmed the NPP’s commitment to defending Ghana’s democracy and urged all citizens to reject violence and division.
“Elections are not a justification for violence or division. Let us all work together to maintain the peace and stability that have been the hallmark of our democracy,” he emphasized.
Mustapha cautioned that the NPP would not tolerate actions aimed at undermining Ghana’s democracy, adding that the party is prepared to defend itself if necessary.
