The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has filed a notice of appeal to contest a High Court ruling that directed the Electoral Commission (EC) to complete the collation and declaration of parliamentary results in four disputed constituencies.
The ruling, delivered on Saturday, January 4, 2025, stemmed from a mandamus application filed by the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The affected constituencies include Tema Central, Ablekuma North, Okaikwei Central, and Techiman South.
The court ordered the EC to finalise the collation processes and officially declare results for these constituencies. It further instructed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to provide security during the collation to ensure a smooth process.
Invalid results
The NPP argued that the results in these constituencies were not properly collated, rendering any prior declarations invalid. The High Court upheld the NPP’s position, emphasizing that the EC must comply with legal requirements to complete the collation.
In response, the NDC’s Director of Legal Affairs, Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, announced the party’s decision to appeal the ruling, describing it as both premature and flawed.
“This matter is far from over. We have filed a notice of appeal to challenge this decision,” Tameklo stated during a media briefing following the judgment.
The appeal signifies the NDC’s intent to contest the legal basis of the High Court’s directive, further prolonging the resolution of the disputed results in these constituencies.
