Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has launched a scathing verbal assault on elements within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary caucus, demanding that Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga control what he dramatically termed “wild dogs” disrupting parliamentary proceedings.
In a media address on Monday, February 3, Afenyo-Markin levelled multiple serious allegations against the NDC, claiming the NDC MPs are deliberately disrupting smooth parliamentary operations at the Appointments Committee sittings.
He accused some NDC committee members of attempting to intimidate the Minority members including the Appointments Committee Chairman.
He also accused the ruling party of “ferrying foot soldiers” to create political pressure and bully the Minority members.
“There are some elements in the NDC in Parliament who are overly aggressive. They believe they must have their pound of flesh and see themselves as the avant-garde of government business,” Afenyo-Markin declared.
The Minority Leader also took a dim view of the Speaker of Parliament, Alban S.K.Bagbin’s decision to suspend three New Patriotic Party (NPP) members for misconduct during the chaos that marred the sitting of the Appointments Committee last Thursday night.
He argued that the Speaker had overstepped his constitutional mandate.
He insisted that proper parliamentary procedures require establishing an investigative committee before implementing punitive measures.
“We are few, but we are a mighty few,” Afenyo-Markin proclaimed, emphasizing the Minority’s determination to resist what he characterized as intimidation and bullying tactics.
“We will not allow ourselves to be cowed. We are going to stand our ground and ensure that the right thing is done—all in the national interest,” he stressed.
