Simon Avabey Agianab has been re-elected as Dean of the Parliamentary Press Corps (PPC) for a second three-year term, following a decisive vote on Friday, March 7, 2025.

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Agianab deeply thanks PPC members for their overwhelming trust and support. He stressed that the decision to retain the existing executive team underscored their confidence in the leadership’s vision and commitment.

“Your decision to re-elect all executives reflects the trust you have placed in us and your belief in the importance of continuity,” he stated.

Mr. Agianab pledged that the executive team would continue to prioritize the welfare and interests of journalists covering parliamentary affairs, emphasizing the critical role of a free and well-supported press in sustaining Ghana’s democracy.

“A vibrant democratic society thrives on the watchdog role of journalists,” he remarked, calling on key national leaders, including President John Mahama, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, and the Chief Justice, to actively support efforts to improve working conditions, ensure journalists’ safety, and provide the resources necessary for effective reporting.

The PPC, which plays a vital role in covering legislative activities and holding public officials accountable, is essential to upholding press freedom and democratic governance in Ghana.

Mr. Agianab’s re-election and his call for enhanced support for journalists signal a renewed commitment to strengthening the media’s role in the country’s development.

In the closely contested elections, the PPC also elected other executives to key positions.

Ekow Skare Anan retained his role as Deputy Secretary with 43 ‘Yes’ votes, while Deborah Dzivenu was elected Treasurer with 44 ‘Yes’ votes. Kwaku Sakyi Danso secured his position as General Secretary with 42 ‘Yes’ votes.

Other notable victories included Ibrahim Alhassan retaining the Organizer position with 30 votes, Stephen Odoi-Larbi winning with 39 votes, and Dean emerging victorious over Clement with 28 votes. One spoiled ballot was recorded during the elections. The voting population was 52.

The newly elected executives are poised to lead the PPC in its mission to provide comprehensive coverage of parliamentary affairs over the next three years, ensuring transparency and accountability in Ghana’s democratic processes.
