Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and Keta MP Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey joined forces in Tsiame, Volta Region, to champion grassroots development through the empowerment of women.
In a heartening show of unity and purpose, the duo spearheaded the distribution of sewing machines, hair dryers, and accessories—essential tools to equip women with the means to build sustainable livelihoods.
The vibrant event drew enthusiastic crowds from Tsiame, Asadame, and neighboring communities. It stood as a compelling testament to what can be achieved when leaders transcend political divides to focus on people-centered development.
Women empowerment
Hon. Afenyo-Markin, describing the visit as a homecoming to his “paternal ancestral roots,” emphasized that the occasion was more than a donation drive—it was a deliberate act of women empowerment.
“We are here to light a spark of opportunity, to stitch together a future of economic freedom, and to stand beside the women who keep our communities strong.”
“These aren’t just machines—they’re keys to self-reliance, symbols of dreams in motion, and the scaffolding for a future where every woman can define her own destiny,” he declared.
Invoking the enduring visions of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and President John Agyekum Kufuor, Afenyo-Markin called for a collective push towards inclusive national development, where women are equipped, uplifted, and recognized.
Kwame Gakpey echoed these sentiments, hailing the initiative as a blueprint for effective, non-partisan collaboration.
“This is what real nation-building looks like—when traditional leaders, government representatives, civil society, and the people walk together in purpose and unity,” he said.
He urged recipients to cherish the equipment, reminding them, “Each stitch you make, each client you serve, adds to a legacy of dignity and independence.”
Development advocate and CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, Ken Ashigbey, who chaired the event, commended the cross-party alliance as a shining example of what’s possible when development is prioritized over politics.
“This partnership between Hon. Afenyo-Markin of the NPP and Hon. Gakpey of the NDC proves that progress knows no party colours,” Ashigbey said stressed the need for continuous investment in women, pointing to persistent gender gaps in sectors such as telecom and finance.
“Today’s effort is not just an act of charity—it’s a statement against inequality and a bold stride toward balanced development,” he added.
Pledging continued support, Afenyo-Markin announced plans for vocational training and educational aid in the area she said, addressing the women directly, “I’m not a hero—I’m a comrade. The real heroes are you. Your strength, your resilience, and your dedication are what keep this community thriving.”
The day concluded with spirited cultural performances and heartfelt gratitude from the residents, many of whom expressed hope that this groundbreaking collaboration would usher in a new era of inclusive and impactful development across the Volta Region.
