Minority poised for resumption of Parliament: Afenyo-Markin pledges constructive scrutiny and national progress

The Minority in Parliament is set to resume its legislative duties on Tuesday, May 26th, armed with a renewed strategy and a commitment to serve as a robust yet responsible opposition, its leader has affirmed.

Following a strategic planning session over the weekend, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin announced the caucus is fully prepared to engage vigorously in the upcoming parliamentary meeting. He stated that the gathering of committee leaders was aimed at aligning priorities and formulating a clear roadmap to enhance their effectiveness in the House.

“This morning, we convened as a caucus to strategize for the second meeting of Parliament. It was a crucial meeting of our committee leaders to meticulously plan how we can be most effective and ensure that the right decisions are made for the advancement of our country,” Mr. Afenyo-Markin said.

The Minority Leader underscored his caucus’s unwavering dedication to strengthening democratic governance. He issued a clear message that they intend to diligently scrutinize the actions of the ruling government.

“We are deeply committed to the flourishing of our democracy, and we want to assure the nation, and indeed our colleagues on the Majority side, that we will be holding their feet to the fire to ensure accountability,” he emphasized.

While signalling a firm stance on oversight, Mr. Afenyo-Markin also stressed the Minority’s determination to operate constructively, with an eye on the future and the ultimate goal of winning the electorate’s trust in the next general elections.

“Concurrently, we are resolved to be a responsible opposition. We want to assure Ghanaians that we are preparing diligently and are ready to take the reins of government in 2028, with a clear vision to make Ghana an even better place for all.”

He reiterated that the Minority is more than prepared to implement its refined strategies upon Parliament’s resumption, aiming to significantly influence the legislative agenda to reflect its key priorities for national development.
