The Commissioner of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Support Services Division (SSD) Dr. Alex Adomako Mensah, has underscored the vital role of the media in fostering tax education and promoting voluntary compliance among Ghanaians.
According to him, a partnership between the GRA and the media is essential to educating and empowering citizens on tax issues and demystifying the tax transition processes currently underway.
Speaking in an interview with thenewsbulletin24.com last Thursday, Dr. Adomako Mensah disclosed that the GRA is launching a national tax education campaign to support a simplified transition model that will make it easier for businesses and individuals to comply with tax laws. The campaign includes stakeholder engagements, town hall meetings, the use of local languages for outreach, and increased media collaboration.
He appealed to media houses to support the campaign: “We invite you to amplify our messages through the many channels available to you. Your support is invaluable as we aim to enhance compliance and increase revenue mobilisation for the benefit of all Ghanaians.”
Dr. Adomako Mensah acknowledged that while the GRA continues to make strides in reform and digital transformation, many citizens still do not fully understand the purpose of tax transition, the processes involved, or how public funds are utilised. He attributed this to misinformation and a lack of accessible information.
“Overcoming these obstacles requires consistent, accurate and accessible information — and this can only be achieved through a strong collaboration with the media,” he stressed.
He called on the media to set the agenda for constructive public discourse on taxation and to present factual, engaging and balanced narratives that build public trust.
“You are not just adjacent quarters. You are the bridge between policy and the people. By highlighting tax-related development success stories and clarifying procedures, you help shape national behaviour and contribute to economic progress,” the Commissioner said.
He also reaffirmed the GRA’s commitment to open communication and transparency, saying the Authority is ready to provide timely information and technical support to aid accurate and responsible reporting on tax matters.
“When a citizen understands the tax issue, they are more likely to comply. And when compliance increases, our nation prospers,” he stressed.
The GRA’s broader strategy, he said, is to strengthen institutional credibility and improve revenue mobilisation in partnership with the media.
