The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has asserted that he will not succumb to any apprehension of potential negative consequences from the judiciary that might deter him from thoroughly questioning Supreme Court nominees on crucial matters.

Speaking during the vetting process of Supreme Court nominees on Friday, June 20, Mr. Afenyo-Markin maintained that his primary obligation is to serve the interest of the Ghanaian public, and not to appease the judicial council.

Addressing concerns raised by critics who he claims have suggested that his questioning of judicial nominees has been excessively rigorous, the Minority Leader stated, “Our purpose here is not to engage in personal attacks. We are focused on addressing legal principles, matters of public policy, and the tenets of good governance.”

He dismissed any suggestion that his assertive approach during the vetting could lead to adverse personal outcomes should he appear before the very judges he is currently scrutinizing.

Unfavourably rule

“If any judge believes they should rule unfavorably against me simply because I discharged my parliamentary duty, then so be it. I have never been apprehensive about practicing at the Supreme Court. From 2013 to 2016, as a member of the opposition, I was a frequent presence in that court, and no adverse ruling ever deterred me,” he declared.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin stressed that his approach is rooted in a profound respect for the legal framework and the democratic responsibilities vested in the Parliament of Ghana.

He pledged to execute his duties with utmost dedication and respect, adding, “We are not here to target anyone’s integrity.”

He appealed to the public to recognize the vital role of the Minority in enriching Ghana’s democratic dispensation, emphasizing that his work on the Appointments Committee is specifically aimed at strengthening democracy.

He urged Ghanaians to exercise patience and understanding with the Committee’s work, rather than expressing irritation.
