Legal practitioner and political commentator Martin Kpebu has launched a scathing critique of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s chances as a future New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer.

He warned that the party retaining him could hand the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government an easy victory in 2028.

According to Kpebu, recent moves by the NPP National Executives to signal support for Bawumia’s continued leadership reflect a worrying top-down approach that sidelines the party’s grassroots base.

Speaking on TV3’s Saturday, June 21, political show The Key Points,  Martin Kpebu quizzed, “Why would the NPP leadership act in a way that signals to the base to fall in line, when it’s the delegates’ conference that should decide? It’s clearly an attempt to entrench Bawumia and maintain the status quo, but it’s the wrong move – it’s only going to make 2028 a walk in the park for the NDC.”

He also expressed reservations about Bawumia’s record in government, arguing that the former Vice President squandered his political capital by failing to deliver on promises and refusing to accept responsibility.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia blew the opportunity when he entered government and couldn’t deliver. Instead of apologising, he offered excuses. He kept trying to rationalise what he said in opposition,” Kpebu noted.

He slammed Bawumia’s infamous comparison of the Ghana Card to 1,000 interchanges as tone-deaf. “What kind of logic is that? Bad roads are a major issue. If you can build 1,000 interchanges, you would transform the economy far more than issuing national IDs,” he said.

The private legal practitioner also faulted Bawumia for what he described as “excessive sloganeering” and superficial speeches.

“He talked way too much in opposition and couldn’t back it up in government. Ghanaians aren’t looking for a talker. They want results,” he added.

Kpebu dismissed Bawumia’s suitability for the presidency, arguing that he is not the right calibre of material and has not shown the qualities needed to lead the country.
