Parliament has inaugurated the Northern Caucus – a non-partisan alliance of Members of Parliament from Ghana’s five northern regions, tasked with confronting the region’s persistent development challenges and driving a future anchored in peace, prosperity, and mutual respect.

Delivering remarks at the inauguration on Friday, June 27, the Leader of the Northern Caucus and Majority Leader, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, underscored the urgent need to address the deep-seated inequalities facing the northern part of the country. He cited official statistics that consistently rank the North among the most deprived regions, with stark deficits in infrastructure, healthcare, education, and economic opportunities.

Hon. Ayariga disclosed that several development partners have already expressed a willingness to support the caucus’s mission to push for equitable resource distribution and increased government investment in strategic infrastructure across the region.

“The people of the North expect us to rise above party lines and deliver real results. Though we haven’t always spoken with one voice, we are now determined to work together to ensure that the promises made to our people are fulfilled,” he said.

He emphasised that the caucus will forge its own strategic path focused on improving living conditions and transforming local economies across the Northern Belt, which includes the North, Northeast, Upper East, Upper West, and Savannah regions.

Adding his voice, Minority Leader Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin challenged the Northern Caucus to be a beacon of national unity and a force for inclusive development. He praised the formation of the group as a shining example of Parliament’s capacity to rise above political and regional divides in the service of national progress.

“The Northern region is a land of immense potential, rich traditions, and a proud history of patriotic service to Ghana. This caucus must not only honour that legacy but also build on it by ensuring that no community is left behind,” Hon. Afenyo-Markin stated.

He pledged the Minority Caucus’s full support for the Northern Caucus’s activities. He reaffirmed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) commitment to supporting any initiative aimed at uplifting the Northern regions and their people.

Hon. Afenyo-Markin further emphasised that Ghana’s democratic future depends on the collective resolve of its leaders to rise above regional and partisan interests in pursuit of the greater national good. He lauded the critical role of Northern MPs in shaping a Parliament that truly reflects the diverse spirit of the country.
