Kwame Gyantuah, a legal practitioner and member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), has stirred debate by questioning the necessity of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) upcoming presidential primary.
Speaking on TV3’s “The Key Points,” Gyantuah stated that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the clear favourite and his victory is assured.
According to him, proceeding with a full internal election when the result is already apparent would be a wasteful expenditure of resources for both the NPP and the other candidates vying for the nomination.

“For me, they should just declare him. It is not worth it. Even the others are going to waste their money… because Dr. Bawumia is going to win this particular election,” he stated bluntly.
Gyantuah’s comments come amid ongoing preparations by the NPP for its presidential primary in January 2026, where it is expected to officially choose its flagbearer for the 2028 general elections. Several contenders have expressed interest, but the former Vice President remains the overwhelming favourite.
The seasoned political commentator suggested that holding a competitive internal election under such circumstances may only serve to generate unnecessary tension.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s growing influence within the NPP has led many political analysts to predict a landslide win in any internal contest. Gyantuah’s remarks underscore the perception that the party’s internal process may be more symbolic than competitive.
