Government on Thursday held a solemn public flower-laying and candle-lighting ceremony in honour of the eight who perished in Wednesday’s tragic military helicopter crash.
The emotional tribute, held at the Ceremonial Garden in front of the Presidency, marked the beginning of a three-day national mourning period declared by President John Dramani Mahama. The crash, which occurred near Adansi Sikaman in the Ashanti Region, claimed the lives of high-ranking government officials and military personnel.
President Mahama, joined by Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang and other senior officials, led the ceremony by laying wreaths in memory of the fallen. Grieving families, officers of the Ghana Armed Forces, religious leaders, and members of the public gathered to pay their respects.

A moment of silence was observed, followed by the lighting of candles—symbolising both hope and eternal remembrance.
The symbolic tribute will continue on Friday, August 8, to allow more Ghanaians the opportunity to mourn and express their condolences.
The national mourning period will conclude on Saturday, August 9, with an “Evening of Reflections and Memorials” at the Forecourt of the State House.
As the country unites in grief, Ghanaians are being encouraged to observe the mourning period with solemnity, dignity, and a renewed spirit of national solidarity.
