A Circuit Court in Accra has convicted eight men for launching violent assaults on former Awutu Senya East MP, Hawa Koomson, and two others during the Ablekuma North parliamentary re-run at the Methodist Church Polling Station on July 11, 2025.

The accused — Jijani Mahmudu, Prince Dzakpasu, Anas Mohammed, Mohammed Hamda, Darko Otibu Samuel, Musah Muntari, Ali Saeed, and Al Mohammed Abubakar — pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to assault and three counts of assault.

Their victims included Koomson, Deputy NPP Organiser Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei, and trader Majeed Mohammed Saana. The group was convicted on their own plea before presiding judge Isaac Addo, who deferred sentencing to Friday, August 29, 2025. Each convict was granted bail of GH¢80,000 with one surety.

According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer, the accused attacked Koomson and Saana while they were visiting polling centres. Despite being rescued by security personnel, the group later assaulted Kwei without provocation.

The victims lodged formal complaints at the Odorkor Police Station and the Regional CID, received medical treatment, and identified their attackers. The convicts initially denied the allegations in their caution statements but later admitted guilt in court.

The sentencing later this week will determine the punishment for the politically charged assault, which has drawn public attention to growing concerns about electoral violence.
