Chairperson of Parliament’s Local Government and Rural Development Committee and MP for Agona East, Hon. Maame Pokuah Queenstar Sawyerr, has called on the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Upper Denkyira East to stand firm and not allow himself to be manipulated by his officers.

Her advice follows an incident in which the Coordinating Director failed to appear before the Committee, withdrawing from the sitting at the last minute and informing the MCE only 30 minutes before the start of proceedings.

Addressing the MCE during the Committee’s sitting, Hon. Sawyerr expressed displeasure over the development, cautioning him against tolerating such conduct.

“Actually, you should not allow yourself to be treated like that. You are representing the President’s interest. And if anything goes wrong, you are the one at risk, not them,” she stressed.

The Chairperson further urged the MCE to be decisive in his leadership, adding that the Committee is prepared to back him if officers within the assembly are undermining his work.

“You should be firm. And if you think they are not helping you, from here let me know, so that we can make changes to succeed with all the money that is sent to your district,” she said.

Hon. Sawyerr warned that the MCE could not sit back and allow his subordinates to ambush him with last-minute decisions and expect to be effective.

“You cannot sit down for them to make a decision, ambush you, and then you also accept it. It is wrong,” she stated emphatically.

The Committee’s intervention, she explained, forms part of a broader push to ensure transparency, accountability, and prudent use of state resources at the local government level, stressing that development funds must directly benefit the people rather than being undermined by poor leadership or administrative lapses.
