President John Dramani Mahama will today, Monday, November 17, officially swear in Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Ghana’s new Chief Justice, following Parliament’s overwhelming approval of his nomination.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie was first nominated on September 23, 2025, with the President citing his distinguished judicial career, which spans the High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court, as well as his decades of dedicated service on the Bench.

Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie
He has served as Acting Chief Justice since April 22, 2025, after the suspension and subsequent dismissal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on November 10, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie pledged to promote an open, inclusive and bipartisan leadership approach. He also reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening judicial independence, improving public trust in the courts and expanding access to justice across the country.
Parliament confirmed his appointment on November 13 with 163 votes in favour and 69 against, clearing the way for today’s swearing-in ceremony at the Jubilee House. His confirmation marks a significant moment for Ghana’s justice system as he assumes leadership at a time of heightened public interest in judicial reforms and accountability.
