The General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev. Stephen Wengam, has led a six-member delegation to pay a courtesy call on the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lt. Gen. William Agyapong, at the Military Headquarters in Accra.

The visit was to congratulate the CDS on his appointment, formally inform him about the upcoming 2026 World Assemblies of God Congress, and brief him on the history and activities of the church in Ghana.

Members of the delegation included the General Secretary, Rev. Dr. Ernest Birikorang; General Treasurer, Rev. Dr. Simon Abu Baba; Regional Superintendent for Greater Accra West, Rev. Michael Ayesu; Regional Superintendent for Eastern Region “A”, Rev. Dr. Albert Anane; and a retired Senior Pastor of the Assemblies of God, Ringway Gospel Centre, Rev. Ernest Agyei.

Rev. Wengam noted that as the church prepares to mark its centenary, the support of the Ghana Armed Forces would be critical in ensuring peace and providing security for international delegates expected at the global congress.

He also extended the church’s sympathies to Lt. Gen. Agyapong over the recent stampede incident at the El Wak Stadium, commending efforts being made to strengthen screening and crowd-control measures to prevent future occurrences.

Responding, Lt. Gen. Agyapong assured the delegation of the military’s full support and collaboration towards the successful hosting of the congress. He further appealed for continuous prayers for the Ghana Armed Forces.

The Chief of Defence Staff described the stampede incident as unfortunate but stressed that important lessons had been learned and corrective measures put in place.

The meeting ended with prayers and the exchange of souvenirs, symbolising continued partnership between the Assemblies of God, Ghana, and the Ghana Armed Forces.
