Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has reportedly been taken into custody by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) over issues relating to his immigration status.
The arrest is reportedly linked to Ofori-Atta’s residency documentation in the United States.
A public statement released by his lawyer, Justice Kusi-Minkah Premo Esq., confirms that the former minister is cooperating fully with U.S. authorities and remains a law-abiding individual.

According to his legal team, Ofori-Atta has an active petition for adjustment of status, which under U.S. immigration law generally permits an applicant to remain in the country lawfully even after the expiration of an initial visa. His lawyers say they are in ongoing discussions with ICE and expect the matter to be resolved swiftly.
The development comes against the backdrop of serious legal troubles in Ghana. Ofori-Atta has been the subject of an Interpol Red Notice since June 2025, after the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) declared him a fugitive from justice.
He is facing 78 corruption-related charges, including allegations tied to the SML–GRA revenue assurance deal and the National Cathedral project.
On December 18, 2024, the Government of Ghana formally submitted an extradition request to the U.S. Department of Justice, seeking his return to face prosecution.
However, his legal representatives insist that he travelled to the United States for medical treatment for prostate cancer, arguing that his health condition has made it impossible for him to return to Ghana.
