Bagbin applauds Prof. Nana Aba Amfo’s landmark election as ACU Council Chair

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has congratulated the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, following her election as Chair of the Council of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU).

In a congratulatory letter addressed to Prof. Amfo, the Speaker described her elevation as a reflection of her outstanding leadership credentials and long-standing contribution to higher education governance.

“Your assumption of this high office bears testimony to your stellar leadership in higher education governance, and your enviable international credentials as a celebrated academic with more than two decades of experience,” Rt. Hon. Bagbin stated.

Prof. Amfo’s election as Chair follows her induction in August 2024 as one of eight members of the ACU Governing Council.

According to the Speaker, her subsequent elevation underscores her global recognition, proven leadership, and extensive experience in academia.

Rt. Hon. Bagbin noted that the Parliament of Ghana takes pride in Prof. Amfo’s achievement, describing it as a significant milestone not only for the University of Ghana but for the country’s higher education sector as a whole.

“Parliament expresses full confidence in your ability to steer the affairs of the Association of Commonwealth Universities Council towards achieving its avowed aim of making higher education a powerful force for sustainable development and societal transformation,” the Speaker added.

He pledged the solidarity and support of Parliament to ensure the success of Prof. Amfo’s tenure as Chair of the Council.

Prof. Amfo’s election to the prestigious role was officially announced by the ACU Head Office in London on January 8, 2026. In her new capacity, she is expected to provide strategic leadership and governance direction for the Association, which represents universities across the Commonwealth.
