President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining a strong and resilient military, even amid limited resources.
He stressed the increasingly complex security environment in Ghana and the wider sub-region during his address to graduates at the Ghana Military Academy on Friday, January 30, 2026.
According to him, the commissioning of new officers demonstrates the state’s determination to safeguard national security.
He stated, “The security situation in our sub-region remains complex and volatile. Violent extremism, terrorism, and trans-border crime continue to pose serious threats, particularly along our northern border.”

President Mahama also pointed out global shifts in security, including the rise of non-state actors and asymmetric warfare.
He emphasized that addressing these challenges requires collaboration that extends beyond the armed forces.
“Security cannot be seen as the sole responsibility of the armed forces and other security agencies. It is a shared national duty,” he remarked, urging citizens, communities, traditional authorities, and civil society to contribute to the protection of the nation’s peace.
