A Ghanaian soldier critically injured in a missile strike on a United Nations peacekeeping base in southern Lebanon earlier this month is showing promising signs of recovery, the UN and Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have confirmed.

Lance Corporal Albert Abrefa Busia, serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), was among the Ghanaian peacekeepers caught in the early March attack.

While three personnel sustained minor injuries, Lance Corporal Busia required urgent medical intervention.

“He has successfully undergone surgery and is responding to treatment,” the GAF said in an official statement, adding that officials had visited the soldier and described his recovery as encouraging.

The UN reiterated that peacekeepers are protected personnel under international law and should never be targeted in conflict zones. “Indeed peacekeepers are not a target,” the organisation said, highlighting its #NotATarget campaign.

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, confirmed that the government has formally petitioned UN Secretary-General António Guterres to launch an investigation and impose sanctions against those responsible.

Ghana remains a key troop contributor to UN peacekeeping operations worldwide, including deployments in Lebanon, South Sudan, Mali, and other conflict zones.
