The Member of Parliament for Damongo, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has described Mahamudu Bawumia as the most prepared and best-suited New Patriotic Party (NPP) leader to guide Ghana beyond 2028.

Speaking on The Pulse, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee said the party’s decision to elect Dr Bawumia as flagbearer reflects strong confidence in his leadership qualities.

He expressed confidence that the NPP will regain public trust ahead of the next general elections.

Mr Jinapor stressed Dr Bawumia’s policy direction, particularly his proposal to introduce a flat tax regime at Ghana’s ports, arguing that it would improve predictability for businesses, boost private sector growth, and reduce the cost of living.

He noted that such a system would give importers certainty and enhance economic planning, adding that similar approaches have proven effective in other jurisdictions.

Touching on governance record, the former Lands and Natural Resources Minister cited the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme as a major intervention that strengthened Ghana’s reserves at the Bank of Ghana and contributed to currency stability.

He also referenced the Agenda 111 hospital initiative as part of Dr Bawumia’s broader contributions to government.

Despite these, Mr Jinapor acknowledged that the NPP faces a major rebuilding task following what he described as a poor performance in the 2024 general elections.

“We had such a bad year in 2024. There’s absolutely no two ways about that,” he admitted.

He disclosed that the party has commenced a comprehensive reorganisation process from the polling station level to the national structure, with completion expected by September.

“We have just begun our reorganisation from the polling station to electoral area, constituency, regional, and national levels,” he explained.

On parliamentary work, Mr Jinapor insisted that effectiveness is not solely determined by numbers, noting that influence can still be exerted from the Minority side.

“Numbers carry the vote, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you win the argument,” he said.

He added that the Minority Caucus, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, remains committed to holding government accountable while presenting alternative policy proposals.

“It’s not going to be easy, but we are pulling our weight,” he stressed.

Mr Jinapor further assured that the NPP would intensify its efforts when Parliament resumes, focusing on addressing key national concerns such as youth unemployment and rising living costs.

He expressed optimism that Dr Bawumia and the party would present a compelling policy blueprint capable of winning back the confidence of Ghanaians.

“The NPP elected a very extraordinary man… with enormous integrity, clarity of thought, and a clear vision for our country. By the grace of God, he will present a strong strategy to win the confidence of the Ghanaian people,” he added.
