The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has stepped in to fund critical medical treatment for a 10-year-old girl diagnosed with a life-threatening brain condition, offering hope to her family after weeks of distress.

Young Regina Agyeiwaa is currently receiving care at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with a posterior fossa tumour—a serious condition located at the base of the brain that requires urgent surgical
intervention.

The cost of the specialised procedures had placed immense financial strain on Regina’s family, leaving them unable to proceed with the required treatment.

After exhausting all available options, the family, through Regina’s uncle, Mr. Edward Kwasi Krupah, made a public appeal for support to save her life.

Following an assessment of the case, Ghana Gold Board approved financial assistance under its Special Intervention Programme.

On April 14, 2026, a delegation led by Mrs. Gloria Precious Ankomah presented a cheque of GH¢86,454.00 to cover the full cost of the surgeries.

“Just a few months in operation, GoldBod has undertaken over 75 social interventions, which is very commendable. Under our health interventions, we have supported individuals to undergo medical surgeries both within and outside
Ghana, including children as young as six years old,” she said.

Medical specialists at Korle Bu have underscored the urgency of Regina’s condition, indicating that the surgeries are critical to improving her chances of survival.

A neurosurgeon at the hospital, Patrick Bankah, explained the severity of the situation.

“She actually came in extremis. She came critically ill. She has a tumour at the back of the head, which caused fluid buildup and increased pressure in the brain,” he said.

He noted that an initial procedure had been performed to relieve pressure, but further surgeries are necessary to fully address the condition.

The financial support has brought immense relief to the family, allowing the treatment process to move forward without delay.

Regina’s mother, Madam Grace Ahenkorah, expressed heartfelt gratitude, describing the intervention as life-saving.

“We didn’t know where to turn again, but GoldBod came through for us when we needed help the most,” she said.

Her sentiments were echoed by Mr. Krupah, who described the support as a turning point that has restored hope to the family.

Officials at the hospital, including Dr. Mawuli Ametepe and senior nursing staff, welcomed the intervention and praised GoldBod for its timely response.

They confirmed that with funding now secured, preparations are underway to carry out the two critical surgeries required for Regina’s recovery.

While GoldBod’s primary mandate focuses on the management of Ghana’s gold resources, the Board has increasingly expanded its role in social support through targeted interventions in healthcare and education.

The support for Regina adds to a growing list of beneficiaries under the programme, reflecting a broader commitment to national development and humanitarian assistance.

For Regina and her family, the donation represents more than financial aid—it is a renewed chance at life.

With the surgeries now within reach, there is cautious optimism that she will recover and return to a normal childhood, as her family continues to hope for the best outcome.
