The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to hit the streets of Sunyani today, Wednesday, April 22, with a protest that is likely to raise political temperatures in the Bono Region.

Dubbed the “Yen Suro Ahunahuna Demo”—to wit, “We are not afraid of intimidation”—the demonstration is expected to draw party faithful, sympathisers, and sections of the public from across the region.

The protest is in response to the arrest of the party’s Sunyani East Communications Officer, Abubakar Yakubu, widely known as Baba Amando.

Party officials say his detention has unsettled the rank and file, insisting that the circumstances surrounding the arrest raise serious concerns about the protection of fundamental human rights, particularly freedom of speech and political expression.

Regional executives of the NPP have described the development as troubling, calling on authorities to provide clarity and transparency on the matter.

According to the party, the demonstration goes beyond the arrest of Baba Amando, serving as a broader platform to defend democratic principles, civil liberties and the rule of law.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has assured the public that adequate security measures have been put in place to ensure a peaceful and orderly protest.

The Police have also urged demonstrators to cooperate with security personnel and comply fully with the laws governing public assemblies.
