The first batch of 430 Ghanaian pilgrims has been successfully airlifted from Tamale to Saudi Arabia for the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage.

The flight departed the Tamale Airport on Friday at 11:30 GMT and is expected to arrive at 4:00 PM GMT, marking the official start of this year’s pilgrimage operations from Ghana.

In total, about 6,000 Ghanaian pilgrims are expected to travel to Mecca for the sacred rites, with departures scheduled across 18 flights between May 1 and May 18, 2026.

Ahead of the takeoff, the Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf John, together with officials of the Ghana Hajj Board, interacted with the pilgrims and offered farewell messages.

The airport was filled with emotion as hundreds of family members and well-wishers gathered to bid goodbye to their loved ones embarking on the spiritual journey.

Communications Director of the Hajj Board, Mohammed Amin Lamtey, assured that comprehensive arrangements have been made to ensure a smooth and successful pilgrimage.

He revealed that an advance team has already been dispatched to Medina to receive the pilgrims, who will spend three days there before proceeding to Mecca.

“This year, we have enhanced our communication systems to ensure that sensitive information is handled accurately and shared appropriately,” he stated.

In his remarks, Mr. John advised the pilgrims to respect the laws and customs of Saudi Arabia and to act in ways that reflect positively on Ghana.

“You are not only carrying your personal faith, but also the image of our nation. Let your conduct reflect the values of peace, tolerance, and unity that Ghana is known for,” he urged.
