The National Organiser of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has proclaimed that the party will embark on a ‘mammoth demonstration’ and a series of nationwide actions in protest against the arrest and prosecution of Kwame Baffoe, aka Abronye DC, the Bono Regional Chairman.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story on Wednesday evening, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly called Nana B, accused the government of using state institutions and sections of the judiciary to suppress dissent and intimidate political opponents.

“We are going to rise. Trust me, in the coming days, we are going to stage a mammoth demonstration. We are going to have a series of activities,” he declared.

According to him, the NPP was informed that Abronye DC had been taken to the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), now known as the National Intelligence Bureau, for interrogation over comments he allegedly made about a judge.

Nana B said the charge against Abronye DC, offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace, is a misdemeanour and questioned why it was being handled so aggressively.

He cited portions of the charge sheet, which allege that Abronye referred to a judge as ‘a politician’ who had ‘covered your hair with a sack and claimed you are a judge.’

The NPP organiser argued that similar and harsher criticisms had been made against the judiciary in the past by members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), including statements by President John Dramani Mahama before he returned to office.

He alleged that certain judges appear to be acting in concert with political actors to suppress free speech.

“I am not saying all judges, but some judges appear to be doing the bidding of elements in government who seek to suppress free speech,” he said.

He singled out ‘Court 9’ at the Accra Circuit Court, claiming that it had repeatedly delivered controversial rulings in politically sensitive cases.

He also referred to previous cases involving activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor and other public figures, arguing that some judicial decisions had later been overturned by higher courts.

The NPP organiser said the party would not be intimidated and vowed to resist what he described as an emerging pattern of harassment.

“There are so many important issues confronting the country, yet the government is focusing on harassing and politically intimidating opponents. We can never be intimidated,” he warned.
