Majority Chief Whip and South Dayi legislator, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has declared that political affiliation will not protect individuals who fall foul of the law, warning against attempts to politicise criminal and legal matters.

According to Mr. Dafeamekpor, Ghana’s democracy can only thrive when public officials, activists, and communicators respect the law and avoid the spread of misinformation.

Addressing a parliamentary leadership engagement with the Press Corps on Friday, the outspoken MP stressed that accountability must apply equally to all citizens regardless of party loyalty or influence.

“By all means, we must not say that because of political affiliation, we can move around and engage in misconduct, and nobody should touch us,” he stated.

“You will be touched. You will be asked questions,” he added.

The Majority Chief Whip argued that many political actors often mistake lawful scrutiny and investigations for persecution, a situation he believes weakens public confidence in state institutions.

He insisted that criticism alone is not criminal, but deliberate falsehoods and defamatory publications could attract legal consequences under Ghanaian law.

“False publication is part of the criminal statutes. It is not an insult for someone to say the law must take its course,” he said.

Mr. Dafeamekpor cautioned politicians and media commentators against rushing to make public claims about ongoing court matters without verifying official records.

Referring to the recent controversy surrounding the legal proceedings involving NPP communicator Kwame Baffoe, alias Abronye DC, he explained that some public commentary about the case turned out to be inaccurate after certified court records became available.

“As lawyers, we always advise that before anybody goes public about court proceedings, they must first obtain a certified true copy of the records,” he noted.

According to him, the confusion surrounding the case underscored the dangers of political propaganda and selective interpretation of judicial decisions.

The South Dayi MP urged political parties to educate their supporters on responsible communication and respect for judicial processes.

Mr. Dafeamekpor maintained that Ghana’s democratic stability depends on equal application of the law and responsible public conduct from both politicians and citizens.
