The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 39-year-old man, Michael Mensah, in connection with the murder of a University of Cape Coast (UCC) student, Innocentia Atsufui Avinu.

In a statement, the police said the suspect was apprehended on Sunday, June 15, 2026, at about 7:15 p.m. by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team following sustained intelligence-led operations.

Preliminary investigations indicate that on June 11, 2026, at approximately 6:48 p.m., Mensah, who reportedly claims to be a teacher but also works as a driver, picked up the deceased from Ayensu Plaza within the UCC hostel enclave.

Police believe the suspect subsequently transported Innocentia Avinu to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen before her death.

Authorities say investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killing are ongoing and have assured the public that additional details will be communicated as the case progresses.

The arrest has heightened public concern over the safety of students and young women, with many demanding answers over the events leading to the tragic death of the UCC student.

The Ghana Police Service has urged the public to remain calm and allow investigators to complete their work while ensuring justice is served.

“Investigations continue, and any further development will be duly communicated,” the police statement said.
