Ghana’s 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has reignited national hope and belief, with members of Parliament describing the triumph as a significant step towards another memorable World Cup campaign.

The Black Stars’ victory in Toronto, Canada, on Wednesday, according to the legislators, was more than just three points, stressing that football remains the most powerful unifying force in Ghana.

Member of Parliament for Berekum West, Hon. Dickson Kyere-Duah, who led the exultation of the team in a statement on Thursday, stressed that regardless of political affiliations, ethnic backgrounds, religious beliefs, or social status, football uniquely brings Ghanaians together under one flag, one anthem, and one national identity.

The MP noted that the victory was particularly significant because it marked only the second time Ghana has won its opening match in five FIFA World Cup appearances.

He recalled that the Black Stars’ previous opening victory came at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa when Ghana defeated Serbia 1-0 before advancing to the quarter-finals and coming within a penalty kick of reaching the semi-finals.

He contrasted the current achievement with Ghana’s campaigns in 2014 and 2022, where opening defeats to the United States and Portugal, respectively, undermined the team’s chances of progressing beyond the group stage.

“The lesson from history is clear: winning the opening match significantly enhances a team’s prospects of advancing to the knockout stage,” he said.

Hon. Kyere-Duah commended the players and technical team for their resilience, discipline, and professionalism in securing the victory against Panama, adding that they had carried the hopes and aspirations of more than 30 million Ghanaians.

He also praised Parliament for its unwavering support for the Black Stars ahead of the tournament. According to him, the Speaker of Parliament mobilised support from parliamentary leadership, MPs, staff, and the wider Ghanaian public, while also dispatching a delegation from the Select Committee on Youth and Sports to Canada to cheer on the team.

The Berekum West legislator further commended Parliament’s television station, Parliament GH TV, for its efforts in promoting support for the national team ahead of the opening match.

While celebrating the victory, Hon. Kyere-Duah cautioned against complacency, admitting that Ghana’s performance against Panama left room for improvement.

“The first fifteen minutes of the game gave many Ghanaians palpitations. The first half was nothing to write home about. However, the team improved markedly in the second half, particularly after tactical substitutions,” he observed.

He stressed that significant improvements would be required if Ghana is to stand a realistic chance against group rivals England and Croatia.

Despite the challenges ahead, the MP expressed confidence in the team’s ability to compete, insisting that determination, teamwork, discipline, and national belief can help the Black Stars overcome even the strongest opponents.

Hon. Kyere-Duah stressed the broader importance of football, noting that the sport contributes significantly to national development through social cohesion, employment creation, tourism promotion, and enhancing Ghana’s international image.

He therefore called on all Ghanaians, irrespective of political affiliation or personal differences, to unite behind the Black Stars as they seek qualification for the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“May this triumph mark the start of another memorable World Cup journey for Ghana,” he stressed.
