President John Dramani Mahama on Sunday joined senior officials of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the official renaming of the party’s national headquarters in honour of its founder, the late former President Jerry John Rawlings.
The ceremony coincided with what would have been Rawlings’ 78th birthday and brought together party executives, government officials, Members of Parliament, and members of the Rawlings family to celebrate the enduring legacy of the late statesman.
President Mahama, accompanied by National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, and other party leaders, participated in a cake-cutting ceremony alongside the children of the late former President.

Among those in attendance were Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, ministers of state, and several government appointees.
Rawlings’ children, including Korle Klottey MP Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings and her siblings, joined party faithful to celebrate their father’s immense contribution to Ghana’s democratic development and the growth of the NDC.
Party members described the renaming of the headquarters as a fitting tribute to a leader whose vision and political influence shaped the NDC for decades and left an indelible mark on Ghana’s political history.
Rawlings led Ghana through a critical transitional period and later secured two successive presidential victories in 1992 and 1996 under the Fourth Republic. His leadership laid the foundation for the NDC’s emergence as one of Ghana’s dominant political parties.
His influence extended beyond his own administration, playing a significant role in the NDC’s return to power in 2009 under the late President John Evans Atta Mills, following a fiercely contested election.
Despite his strong attachment to the party he founded, Rawlings later became an outspoken critic of certain aspects of its governance, often expressing concern over the conduct of some party officials and government appointees. His public criticisms frequently sparked national debate and underscored his unwavering commitment to accountability, integrity, and discipline in public service.
Jerry John Rawlings passed away on November 12, 2020, at the age of 73 at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra after a short illness.
Nearly six years after his passing, the NDC continues to honour his legacy, with the renaming of its national headquarters standing as yet another symbol of his enduring influence on the party and Ghana’s democratic journey.
