South Africa, Morocco, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Egypt, Cape Verde, and Ghana have all booked their places in the knockout stage, underlining the continent’s growing strength on the global football stage.

Among the standout stories is Cape Verde, the smallest nation ever to reach the World Cup knockout phase. The Blue Sharks stunned the football world by advancing from a difficult group featuring Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia, and will now face defending champions Argentina in the Round of 32.
South Africa also impressed by progressing from Group A, while Morocco continued the momentum built from their historic semi-final run at the 2022 World Cup. Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Egypt, and Ghana also secured qualification after strong performances during the group stage.
The continent’s tally could still increase to nine teams if DR Congo and Algeria successfully navigate their final Group K and Group J matches, respectively.
DR Congo remain in contention in Group K alongside Portugal and Colombia, while Algeria are still battling for a knockout berth in Group J.
Should both nations qualify, Africa would have nine representatives in the Round of 32—an unprecedented achievement and a powerful statement about the continent’s continued rise in world football.
With the African teams eyeing deep runs in the tournament, the continent will be hoping to build on its best-ever World Cup performances and challenge for further history in the knockout rounds.
