The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has arrested New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team member Dennis Miracles Aboagye at the Accra International Airport over alleged corruption-related matters linked to his tenure as Chief Executive Officer of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCC).

Mr Aboagye was apprehended by EOCO officers with the assistance of Immigration officials on Sunday, July 12, 2026, before being taken into custody.

Sources indicate that the arrest is connected to investigations into alleged corruption during his time at the IMCC. However, EOCO has yet to publicly state the specific offences or announce any formal charges against him.

Shortly after the arrest, the NPP issued a statement signed by its General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, expressing concern over the circumstances surrounding Mr Aboagye’s detention.

According to the statement, EOCO has denied the former government official access to his legal representatives and has not disclosed his whereabouts.

“Officers of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), with the help of Immigration officers, arrested Dennis Miracles Aboagye at the airport and took him into custody. Since then, they have denied his lawyers access, and his whereabouts have not been disclosed, with no charges preferred,” the statement said.

The opposition party described the arrest as an act of political intimidation rather than a legitimate law enforcement exercise.

The NPP argued that Mr Aboagye has been one of the government’s most outspoken critics, particularly on the issue of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey. The party also noted that he had publicly declared his intention to contest for a leadership position within the NPP only hours before his arrest.

The party has therefore called on EOCO to either immediately release Mr Aboagye or formally charge him and arraign him before a competent court in accordance with the provisions of the 1992 Constitution.

It further demanded that EOCO grant him unrestricted access to his lawyers and family, insisting that his constitutional rights must be upheld throughout the investigative process.
