Ranking Member of Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee and Ofoase Ayirebi MP Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has expressed confidence that Ghana’s economy will experience a strong recovery under a future New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration led by former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to Mr Oppong Nkrumah, an NPP government under Dr Bawumia would prioritise economic stability, low inflation, a stronger Ghanaian cedi and improved fiscal management.

He made the comments during parliamentary debate on the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review presented by Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson last Thursday.

The Ofoase Ayirebi MP criticised the government’s economic management, arguing that the administration’s approach to fiscal consolidation is negatively affecting the implementation of development projects and the creation of jobs.

“The next NPP government under the leadership of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will ensure that we have inflation at low rates,” Mr Oppong Nkrumah told Parliament.

He also pledged that a future NPP administration would work to stabilise the Ghanaian cedi and create a more predictable economic environment for businesses and households.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah’s comments come amid continued political debate over the performance of the economy and the impact of government policies on inflation, employment, public spending and the cost of living.

The NPP lawmaker slammed the government’s claim of fiscal discipline, arguing that fiscal consolidation should not come at the expense of critical public services and development programmes.

He alleged that the government had under-executed significant portions of its budget, resulting in delays in the implementation of projects and programmes across the country.

According to him, the government had failed to execute projects, jobs and programmes worth approximately GH¢30 billion by the middle of the year.

He argued that the situation had contributed to concerns among constituents over the slow pace of development and limited employment opportunities.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah also questioned the government’s decision to maintain strict expenditure controls while several sectors, including education and health, faced demands for additional recruitment.

He claimed that the Education Ministry needed to recruit thousands of young Ghanaians but is experiencing challenges relating to financial clearance.

The MP said similar concerns existed in the health sector, where additional recruitment is needed to strengthen the delivery of healthcare services.

He argued that economic recovery should ultimately be measured by improvements in the lives of ordinary citizens and not only by macroeconomic indicators.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah further criticised the government’s approach to inflation, suggesting that lower inflation figures should be accompanied by increased economic activity, job creation and improved household incomes.

He maintained that the next NPP administration would focus on creating an environment where businesses could expand, young people could find employment and households could regain confidence in the economy.

The Ofoase Ayirebi MP also expressed concern over the stability of the cedi and the cost of imported goods, arguing that exchange rate stability would be critical to reducing inflationary pressures and promoting economic recovery.

He said the NPP would pursue policies aimed at strengthening the currency while improving the country’s ability to generate sufficient domestic revenue to finance development.

He said a future NPP government under Dr Bawumia would seek to combine macroeconomic stability with policies that promote jobs, business growth and improved living standards.

The former Information Minister therefore urged Ghanaians to look beyond short-term economic figures and assess which political party could provide sustainable solutions to the country’s economic challenges.

He maintained that the NPP’s proposed approach would restore confidence in the economy and create the conditions necessary for stronger and more inclusive growth.
