President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the first 700 housing units at the Saglemi Housing Project are expected to be completed and commissioned by March 2027, with a total of 1,500 units targeted for completion by December 2027.

President Mahama announced this during a tour of the Saglemi housing project, where construction and rehabilitation works are underway to restore the long-delayed residential development.

The Saglemi project, which was initiated during the administration of the late President John Evans Atta Mills and continued under President Mahama’s first term, stalled for several years after a change of government.

The project subsequently became the subject of investigations and a criminal justice process under the erstwhile New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, involving the then Minister for Works and Housing.

According to President Mahama, the prolonged inactivity resulted in significant deterioration and the theft of critical infrastructure and fittings from the project.

He said electrical cables, wash basins, bathtubs, lighting fixtures and telecommunications cables were among items removed from the estate during the period the project remained inactive.

“700 units by March next year we will be able to commission. And another 1,000, actually a total of 1,500 by the end of next year, by December next year,” President Mahama said.

He explained that the government eventually opted for a partnership with the private sector to complete the project and transform the development into a functional residential community.

President Mahama expressed confidence that the completed saglemi housing estate would attract workers and families, particularly those employed in nearby industrial areas.

He said the government would soon open a registration portal for prospective homeowners to express their interest in acquiring units at the estate.

“If people don’t register fast enough, you see all these industries here, all the way to Tema, those in the industrial area, Dawa industrial area. They will snap up all the houses for their workers,” he said.

President Mahama said the Saglemi estate would also benefit from water infrastructure being developed in the nearby Dawa Industrial Area.

He explained that a water treatment plant serving the industrial park has excess capacity, which could be used to supply potable water to the Saglemi community.

According to him, the additional water supply would also support the Tema industrial area through a collaboration involving the Ghana Water Company Limited.

The President further highlighted road and railway infrastructure as key developments that would enhance connectivity in the area.

He said the government is working on the dualisation of the road from the Saglemi area towards Aflao, while another phase of the project from Central University is being awarded.

A railway link, he added, would provide transportation for people and facilitate the movement of containers and other industrial goods from the Tema Port to businesses in the area.

President Mahama described the area as an emerging major industrial and residential corridor.

The President also linked the Saglemi development to the government’s broader new city concept, which he said would stretch from the area through Bundase and towards the Volta Lake.

He said the proximity of the Saglemi housing estate to the Dawa Industrial Park made the project an important component of the planned urban and industrial expansion.

President Mahama expressed optimism that the first batch of completed houses could be commissioned around Easter 2027.

Meanwhile, Kojo Aduhene, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of LMI Holdings, the Saglami Housing property developer, said critical infrastructure works are progressing across the estate.

“We’re doing all the underground cabling, clearing the weeds, and water will not be a problem because we’ve got a water plant ready in the Dawa Industrial Area and it’s enough to supply water for all the units,” Mr Aduhene said.

He also disclosed that internet connectivity would be available across the housing units.
