The Minority in Parliament has filed a fresh motion seeking the establishment of an ad hoc committee to investigate alleged GH¢22 billion loss arising from gold trade transactions involving the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) and the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

The motion also seeks to have GoldBod Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi appear before the proposed committee if Parliament approves the request.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who disclosed this, stated that the motion has been endorsed by several Minority MPs, including Ofoase-Ayirebi MP Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Tweneboah Koduah, Jerry Shaib Ahmed, Vincent Asafuah, Dr Kyei Asamoah and Ranking Member of Parliament’s Finance Committee, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam.

According to Mr Afenyo-Markin, the proposed committee would investigate the circumstances surrounding what the Minority says was a US$1.7 billion loss incurred from gold trade transactions in 2025.

The motion is also seeking an examination of the circumstances surrounding the Bank of Ghana’s reported GH¢9 billion loss for the 2025 financial year.

“We have filed a fresh motion and put forward our argument. All the documents are tied there too for the Speaker, who has the power of admissibility to determine admissibility,” Mr Afenyo-Markin said.

He explained that the latest application follows an earlier motion submitted by the Minority for an investigation into the matter. He alleged that the previous motion was repeatedly delayed before being put to a vote and rejected by the Majority.

Mr Afenyo-Markin further argued that any parliamentary inquiry should cover all institutions and actors involved in the gold transactions, including GoldBod, the Bank of Ghana and gold aggregators.

He also pointed to Sammy Gyamfi’s stated willingness to appear before Parliament, expressing hope that the Majority would allow the proposed investigation to proceed.

“Since the chief executive has offered to come, I believe his party has heard him. We pray that the 189 majority will not stampede us,” he said.

The Minority is additionally requesting that proceedings of the proposed committee be broadcast live, citing the public interest surrounding the issue and the magnitude of the alleged financial loss.

“Gold Board must bring all its books. I mean, because they said they are ready. BOG must come. We would invite those we have to invite and have live coverage because GH¢22 billion is a huge sum,” Mr Afenyo-Markin stated.

The fresh motion now awaits consideration by the Speaker of Parliament, who will determine whether it meets the requirements for admission and subsequent consideration by the House.
