Arsenal began their Premier League title defence emphatically, brushing aside newly promoted Coventry City with a commanding 3-0 win under the Emirates Stadium lights.

Goals from Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka, and Martin Ødegaard powered the Gunners to a statement opening-night performance, sending a clear message to their rivals.

From the first whistle, Arsenal dictated the tempo. The breakthrough arrived in the 15th minute when Ben White switched play to the left flank. Riccardo Calafiori collected and delivered a precise low cross into the box, where Kai Havertz arrived perfectly to sweep the ball into the bottom corner — his first goal of the new campaign.

The goal settled any early nerves and set the tone for a thoroughly professional display from Mikel Arteta’s side.

Arsenal’s dominance paid off again just eight minutes later. A well-worked overload on the left allowed Christos Tzolis to drill a dangerous cutback into the area. Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth could only palm the ball into the path of Bukayo Saka, who made no mistake from close range to double the lead.

The England international’s finish underlined Arsenal’s clinical edge — a hallmark of their title-winning campaign last season.

Coventry showed brief promise towards the end of the first half, with Loum Tchaouna’s overhead kick landing on the roof of the net. But Arsenal resumed control after the break and put the result beyond doubt in the 50th minute.

A slick combination between White and Saka on the right created space for Martin Ødegaard. The Norwegian captain struck firmly towards goal, and Rushworth could only deflect the ball into his own net off his glove — gifting Arsenal a third and sealing a comfortable victory.

With the game safely in hand, Arteta turned to his bench. Martin Zubimendi and Noni Madueke replaced Declan Rice and Saka just past the hour mark, offering fresh energy and giving key players valuable rest ahead of a tough away run.

Tzolis nearly added a fourth with a powerful first-time effort from a corner, but Rushworth produced a sharp save to keep the scoreline respectable.

For Coventry City, making their first top-flight appearance in 25 years, the night was a harsh reminder of the gulf in quality. Jack Rudoni came closest to a consolation with a late header, but David Raya was well-positioned to gather comfortably.

The Sky Blues showed fight, but Arsenal’s precision, movement, and defensive organisation proved too much to handle.
