A committee is expected to be constituted by early next week to determine appropriate compensation for persons whose businesses and properties were affected by the recent demolition of facilities at La Pleasure Beach in Accra.

The committee will bring together representatives of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), the La Dadekotopon Municipal Assembly (LaDMA), traditional authorities, management of the affected beaches and the Member of Parliament for the area, Naa Odoley Sowah.

Mrs Sowah, who is also Deputy Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, disclosed this when she appeared before Parliament’s Committee on Local Government and Decentralisation on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.

LaDMA officials also appeared before the committee to answer questions concerning the demolition of beach facilities and related flood mitigation exercises.

Mrs Sowah said data on persons affected by the demolition had already been compiled, but the nature and amount of compensation had not yet been determined.

She explained that the committee would assess the circumstances of affected persons before deciding on an appropriate compensation package.

“We have gotten their data, and the committee is going to look at what we are going to give to them as compensation. So those affected will be compensated. The decision for the type of compensation has not been finalised, but as the MP I am following up deeply on that to ensure that everybody gets what they are supposed to get,” she said.

According to the Deputy Minister, the committee would also consider the needs of persons who may have to be relocated, as well as those who may require financial compensation following the demolition.

She stressed that the La Pleasure Beach exercise was separate from the demolition at Laboma Beach, which would be addressed under a different arrangement.

The Chief Executive of LaDMA, Alfredos Nii Anyetei, told the committee that the demolition at Laboma was undertaken as part of efforts to address flooding and restore an ecological site.

He said the municipal assembly was not consulted before the exercise but was shown, during a meeting, the location where the demolition would take place.

Mr Anyetei added that he was not aware that the Member of Parliament had been specifically informed about the exercise.

The parliamentary engagement is expected to provide further clarity on the circumstances surrounding the demolitions and the measures being considered for affected businesses, property owners and persons who may require relocation.
