Former President John Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has vowed to hold members of the current Akufo-Addo administration accountable for any misconduct in office.
The NDC government, he said, will hold to account members of this administration who have abused the public trust by misconducting themselves in office.
In a resolute New Year message delivered on January 3, the former President reiterated his commitment to fighting corruption and restoring responsible governance if allowed to lead the country again.
Expressing his passion for the anti-corruption cause, Mahama emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in government to build trust and confidence in institutions.
He pledged to reduce the size of the government to cut down on expenditure and outlined plans to combine ministries and eliminate duplicating government agencies, emphasizing the need for fiscal responsibility.
Mahama addressed the economic challenges faced by Ghanaians, highlighting the impact of new taxes on ordinary citizens.
He criticized the drastic increase in the budgetary allocation for President Akufo-Addo’s office amid hardships faced by the people.
Mahama lamented the decline in living standards and economic mismanagement, stating, “Bawumia’s economic mismanagement and corruption and Akufo-Addo’s poor governance and leadership have led to a significant decline in living standards for the ordinary Ghanaian.”
He called attention to the challenges experienced in 2023, describing it as a continuation of years of hardship, high living costs, and worsening poverty.
Mahama criticized the 2024 budget for imposing additional taxes on the already burdened taxpayers.
Urging Ghanaians to bring about change, Mahama declared, “The NPP has brought economic calamity on us… That process must start in earnest with the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.”
He called on the citizens to seize the opportunity presented by the elections to reset the nation on the right path.
