Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, will be participating in a significant historical event—the 150th anniversary of the 3rd Anglo-Asante War, known as the Sagrenti War, in Kumasi, at the invitation of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
This commemoration, taking place at the Manhyia Palace, marks a crucial chapter in the Ashanti Kingdom’s history, celebrating its bold stand against British colonial forces in 1874.
Speaker Bagbin expressed deep appreciation for the invitation, underscoring the event’s importance in honouring the Ashanti Kingdom’s cultural heritage and bravery.
He emphasized the need for efforts to recover the royal regalia and artefacts taken by the British during the war, advocating for negotiation as a means to reclaim these essential pieces of Ghana’s heritage.
In conversations with the Asantehene’s delegation, Speaker Bagbin stressed the educational significance of commemorating such historical events.
He suggested the organization of additional programs to educate the youth about their rich cultural background, to dispel any feelings of inferiority and to encourage them to explore opportunities both within Africa and internationally.
Nana Nsuase Poku Agyeman III provided a briefing on the profound effects of the Sagrenti War, including the destruction of Asantehene Kofi Karkari’s palace and the loss of many lives.
He also mentioned that the anniversary coincides with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s Silver Jubilee of his coronation, further elevating the event’s importance.
The anniversary will feature a symposium on February 6th, 2024, and a grand durbar on February 8th, 2024, to reflect on both the historical and modern significance of the Ashanti Kingdom.
The scheduling of the durbar, allowing for black attire to honour those lost in the war, respects traditional customs and the cultural significance of mourning.
Additionally, a comprehensive 700-page book detailing the history of the Asante Kingdom will be launched, providing in-depth insights into the Ashanti people’s enduring legacy and resilience.
This educational resource and the anniversary events offer a profound opportunity to understand and appreciate the historical depth and cultural richness of the Ashanti Kingdom.
