The Minority Caucus in Parliament has called on the government to urgently complete ongoing works on the Accra-Kumasi Highway following a fatal accident at the Birimso Bridge.
The devastating multi-vehicle collision, which occurred on Monday, August 3, 2026, claimed at least 15 lives, leaving several others injured.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, August 4, and signed by Kennedy Nyarko Osei, Ranking Member of the Roads and Transport Committee, the Minority expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy. It extended its condolences to the bereaved families.

The Caucus also sympathised with those who sustained injuries and wished them a speedy and full recovery.
The Minority said the latest accident is a painful reminder of the longstanding safety challenges confronting one of Ghana’s most important transport corridors.
“Far too many lives have been lost on this highway, and the nation cannot continue to accept these recurring tragedies as inevitable,” the Caucus said.
The Minority Caucus urged the government to prioritise the completion of all ongoing sections of the Accra-Kumasi Highway, including existing bypasses and other outstanding road works.
According to the Caucus, while the government’s long-term plan to construct an Accra-Kumasi Expressway is commendable, immediate attention must be given to completing the existing highway infrastructure to help reduce the risk of further fatal crashes.
The Minority noted that the government has committed US$1.7 billion to the proposed Accra-Kumasi Expressway Project, with the funds reportedly set aside in an escrow account at the Bank of Ghana.
However, the Caucus argued that approximately US$300 million would be enough to complete the existing bypasses and other ongoing works on the current Accra-Kumasi Highway.
The Minority Caucus stressed that the completion of the existing highway should be treated as a matter of national urgency as preparations for the proposed expressway continue.
“While the long-term vision of constructing an expressway is commendable, the Minority Caucus believes that the immediate priority should be to complete the existing highway that can save lives now,” the statement said.
The Caucus further noted that the continued occurrence of fatal crashes along the critical corridor requires the government to expedite outstanding road works to improve safety for motorists and passengers.
The latest Accra-Kumasi Highway accident has therefore renewed calls for urgent interventions to address road safety concerns along the busy route, which serves as a major link between the southern and northern parts of the country.
