Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman Paul Awentami Afoko has officially declared his bid to reclaim the party’s top leadership position, unveiling a “Three Rs” agenda—Reunite, Rebuild and Recapture—which he says will restore unity within the NPP and position it to win the 2028 general election.
Mr Afoko, who is seeking a return to the party’s top leadership position, made the declaration during an exclusive interview with Akoma in Kumasi on Thursday, August 6, 2026.

He expressed unwavering confidence that the NPP can regain the trust of Ghanaians and recapture political power through a deliberate, structured approach to internal reconciliation and organisational renewal.
‘Three Rs’ agenda
At the heart of Mr Afoko’s campaign is what he describes as the “Three Rs” — Reunite, Rebuild, and Recapture — a comprehensive framework designed to position the NPP as a credible, disciplined alternative ready to govern Ghana beyond 2028.
Reunite involves healing internal divisions, restoring trust among party factions, and fostering a culture of inclusiveness across all levels of the NPP structure.
Rebuild focuses on strengthening party machinery, empowering grassroots members, revitalising polling station executives, and ensuring that all organs of the party function effectively.
Recapture represents the ultimate goal: restoring public confidence in the NPP and presenting the party as a united, disciplined force capable of winning the 2028 Ghana general election.
Speaking during the interview, Mr Afoko revealed that his decision to contest the NPP National Chairman position followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders across the party’s spectrum. These included party elders, former and current national executives, Members of Parliament, regional executives, and representatives of the youth, women’s, and grassroots wings.
“The engagements revealed widespread concern about the party’s current state,” Mr Afoko stated, “but also a strong belief that the NPP can overcome its challenges under purposeful, transparent leadership.”
Mr Afoko appealed directly to NPP delegates to support his candidature, promising a leadership style anchored in transparency, inclusiveness, and selfless service. He emphasised that the interests of the party must supersede personal ambition, and called on all members to uphold the values of sacrifice, commitment, and service.
“Unity remains the surest path to returning the NPP to government,” he declared.
The NPP leadership contest is expected to be fiercely competitive, as the party seeks to rebound from its current opposition status and mount a strong challenge in the 2028 general election. Political analysts view Mr Afoko’s “Three Rs” message as a direct response to internal fragmentation that has troubled the party in recent years.
