A senior aide to former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has alleged that some prison inmates attempted to poison the politician while he was in custody.
Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, an aide to Chairman Wontumi, said the alleged incident occurred a few days before he disclosed the matter, adding that prison authorities had initiated investigations to establish the facts.
The allegation emerged on Tuesday, October 27, as Chairman Wontumi marked 100 days in prison.

Speaking to Accra-based Citi FM, Dr Boakye-Danquah said the former NPP regional chairman had informed him about the alleged poisoning attempt when he appeared in court.
“Chairman is okay. We haven’t received any medical reports from the doctors. But I have received indications that over the past week, some prison inmates attempted to poison him,” he said.
Dr Boakye-Danquah stressed that the claim has not yet been independently verified, noting that investigations are underway to determine what actually happened.
“And so I’ve been informed that there are some investigations that are ongoing to make sure that they verify the truth or otherwise of that,” he added.
He further disclosed that he had contacted the prison commander over the allegation and was assured that the matter was being investigated.
“He mentioned that to me today when he came to court, and I have spoken to the commander, and the commander said he has asked them to investigate the matter. So he will come back to me on that issue,” Dr Boakye-Danquah said.
The aide, however, confirmed that he had not received any medical reports linking Chairman Wontumi to a poisoning incident.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged attempt remain unclear, and there has been no independent confirmation that any inmate tried to poison the politician.
The outcome of the prison authorities’ investigations is expected to help establish the facts surrounding the allegation.
Chairman Wontumi, a prominent figure in the NPP, previously served as the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman and remains an influential personality within the opposition party.
