The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has endorsed Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia’s proposal to introduce a flat rate tax on the importation of spare parts.
This move by the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential aspirant is viewed as a game-changer for the spare parts industry in Ghana.
In a statement, the Association praised the initiative, believing it will protect the interests of spare parts dealers across the nation.
“We are in full support of Dr. Bawumia’s proposal. It’s a visionary step that promises to fortify our industry and alleviate the financial pressures on both dealers and consumers,” Head of Communications for the Association, Takyi Addo said.
The flat tax rate proposal was announced during a forum in Accra on February 7, where Dr. Bawumia, serving as Vice President and the NPP’s flagbearer, committed to easing the tax burden on spare parts imports should the NPP emerge victorious in the upcoming elections.
This policy is anticipated to significantly lower spare parts prices, providing relief to commercial drivers and the commuting public by potentially lowering transport fares.
The Association expressed its eagerness for the policy’s implementation, which hinges on the NPP’s success in the December 7, 2024 elections.
“This is not just about our industry; it’s about the broader impact on the economy and the everyday Ghanaian. We are ready to work with all stakeholders to see this through,” Addo added.
He urged members of the Association to unite in support of the proposal, which he argued would be pivotal for the industry’s growth and the nation’s economic development.
