Prof. Frimpong Boateng, a prominent politician and staunch member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urged voters not to support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 elections.
He argued that Dr. Bawumia is alien in the NPP and lacks an emotional connection to the party.
Voting for him, he warned, would merely extend President Akufo-Addo’s administration.
Stressing the NPP’s shortcomings under the current leadership, Prof. Boateng criticized the party’s failure to tackle corruption effectively.
He remarked, “This is not the NPP President Kufuor left us.”
He lamented the state of governance, emphasizing that despite President Akufo-Addo’s legal expertise, the country is struggling with issues of separation of powers and the rule of law.
Prof. Boateng also expressed concern over the fragmentation within the NPP, blaming it on a flagbearer who lacks deep ties to the party.
He recalled that before Dr. Bawumia was chosen as Nana Akufo-Addo’s running mate in 2008, he wasn’t even a party member—a decision that faced resistance from many, including former President Kufuor.
Dr. Bawumia’s selection, he noted, was based on his reputation as an economic expert, but Prof. Boateng argued that this promise has not been fulfilled.
He lamented the erosion of the NPP’s core values, stating, “The NPP I knew was a party that upheld the rule of law, good governance, and separation of powers.”
“It was a party that believed it belonged to the people, not a select few.”
He criticized the rise of individuals without legitimate roles in the party, who now wield power and disrespect long-standing members.
Prof. Frimpong-Boateng expressed his disappointment in the party’s current direction, noting that it no longer prioritizes the welfare of the people or the future of the younger generation.
“This is not the NPP I love,” he declared, urging the party to realign with its founding principles.
