A local governance expert has raised doubts over Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s potential to implement independent governance strategies if elected as president.
Despite Bawumia’s commitment to maintaining a lean government with no more than 50 ministers and deputy ministers, the local government expert, Dr. Frederick Oduro, remains sceptical about the degree of departure from the current administration’s policies.
Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, has outlined a governance vision centered on efficiency, private sector enhancement, and improved institutional systems.
His promises were made during the presentation of his vision to the country.
However, Dr. Oduro emphasized the necessity for Bawumia to distinguish his policies significantly from those of President Akufo-Addo, under whom Bawumia has served as Vice President and erase all doubts about his independence if elected.
“The challenge lies in demonstrating that Bawumia can stand as his own man, with a policy direction distinctly different from the current administration,” Oduro stated.
The expert’s remarks highlight a broader discussion on the continuity and change within the political landscape, questioning whether Bawumia’s leadership would mark a significant shift or merely extend the policies of President Akufo-Addo’s government.
