Members of Parliament have emphasized the profound significance of the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan in promoting spiritual growth, discipline, and societal virtues among Muslims and the Ghanain broader community.
In a statement delivered on the floor of Parliament on Monday at the commencement of the fasting month, the MP for Tamale Central, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, emphasized that the nature of Ramadan extends well beyond the mere abstention from food and drink from dawn till dusk.
“Ramadan is a period dedicated to personal enhancement, spiritual contemplation, and the fostering of virtues like gratitude and discipline, resonating with the teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH),” he stated.
He explained the three stages of Ramadan, each aimed at fostering mercy, seeking forgiveness, and achieving liberation from sin, with the ultimate goal of contributing positively to a just, corruption-free society.
Stressing the societal impacts of Ramadan, Hon. Muhammed pointed out the psychological and health benefits, including a sense of community through acts of charity (zakat) and physical detoxification.
He also called for religious tolerance and inclusivity in Ghana, especially in educational settings during Ramadan, and warned against the dangers of politicizing religion in the lead-up to the 2024 General Elections.
Addressing another significant issue, the MP spoke on the national debate surrounding LGBTQ+ activities and the Promotion of Proper Sexual Rights and Family Value Bill, 2024.
He called for swift action from the President to align with Ghanaian cultural and societal norms.
Chairman of the Muslim Caucus, Farouk Aliu Mahama, also spoke on the importance of Ramadan in fostering unity and charity, especially significant in an election year. He advocated for the Muslim community to lead by example in promoting peace and unity.
Other members expressed their support and solidarity, underlining the collective vision of nurturing a compassionate, understanding, and harmonious world through the enduring principles of Ramadan.
